New Methods of Social Grade Classification

The new study on social class publicised by BBC Lab UK working with Prof Mike Savage of the LSE and Prof Devine is a truly excellent contribution to the debate on updating methods for social grade classification. Conceptually, the idea of including cultural and social capital as well as economic capital in a classification makes alot of sense. According to the survey, people in the UK now fit into seven social classes. The traditional schema (of working, middle and upper class) appears to be out of date, accounting for just 39% of people in the survey.
